History: The Maze Runner and Minho

Personality: Perhaps one of the best words to describe Minho is unpredictable. Though he's one of the oldest Gladers, both in estimated age and time spent in the Glade, he's still a teenager. Despite this he can show surprising maturity after being given the responsibilities of a man. As the Keeper of the Runners, he had to watch the back of his running partner, train Runners on how to survive the Maze, and organize their basic strategy, all while keeping himself alive. Sure, memorizing a maze sounds easy, but what about a maze that changes every night? Despite this, he has everyone map out their sections of the Maze day after day for years in hopes of finding a change or learning the secret to escaping. He's also one of the first to ever survive a night in the Maze, navigating it's passages while they move and predicting the changes based on what part of the cycle it is currently in.

It’s also Minho's job to keep hope alive for the rest of the Gladers and never act disheartened by his inability to find an exit or other means of escape. Though they're trapped in the Glade for more than two years, he never stops running and never lets the Runners take a day off. This not only shows how tenacious he is about finding an exit, but that he cares for the collective mental welfare of the Gladers. Even after leaving the Maze, he officially takes the role of the leader of more than a dozen boys. This means keeping them all alive while getting through the Trials and whatever WICKED has planned for them. The others look to him for guidance and inspiration when faced with a variety of mental and physical challenges, and even if he's not the best speaker he does what he can to keep them all alive.

Because of this huge responsibility resting on his shoulders, what should be a large range of emotions for a teenager is often bottled up for the sake of prioritizing his responsibilities as an adult. This leads to his emotions being erratic at best. When not in immediate danger, he often switches between teasing friends and scolding them. At their first meeting, Thomas has “the hardest time figuring out if he liked Minho or not—his personality seemed to change every minute.” Even those close to him sometimes have trouble knowing when Minho is being playful and when he is genuinely upset. At worst, he is volatile, letting his anger and pride control him even in the middle of dangerous situations. Minho is acutely aware of what he is and is not capable of, leading him to get cocky. He also isn't the kind to keep negative opinions to himself which means he comes across as rather sassy and confrontational to those he dislikes.

Despite his tendency toward quick changes in his emotions, Minho is a fearsome friend to those who deserve it regardless of how long he's known them. He allowed himself to be trapped in the Maze for the sake of trying to save Alby, someone he has been friends with since they both arrived in the Glade as some of its first inhabitants. Though he deserts Thomas at one point, he quickly rallies behind him once he is sure that Thomas is worth fighting for. They face the Grievers together and protect each other, and in return Minho puts unwavering trust in a boy who he has only know a few days. This doesn't mean that he's quick to trust people, though, and in fact he has trouble getting along with some of the other boys in the Glade even after years of proximity. The intensity that Minho exhibits in friendships is the same with enemies; his clear dislike for Gally leads to him acting rashly and physically attacking him, which in turn makes him into an even bigger enemy. Though Minho is a strong leader, his stubbornness and lack of foresight means that he relies on others for guidance, even if he doesn’t like to admit it.

Abilities/Powers: Minho is of above-average intelligence with an excellent spatial memory. He can be stubborn at times, but his ability to make quick decisions without second-guessing himself has saved lives. This paired with his strength and immunity to The Flare make him an asset to those around him, and especially those observing him. His entire life has been manipulated to make him a survivor and test his basic skills. Wiped of all memories and thrown into an unfamiliar setting, he was able to survive as one of the first Gladers even while those around him died. Running the Maze daily and living off the land has cut Minho into a special kind of animal, lean and fearless.

Apart from the mental and physical ordeals he went through in the controlled environment of the Maze, Minho has also started to experience the chaos of the outside world. He has survived mechanical monsters, starvation, scorching deserts, lightning strikes, explosions, and more than one brush with legitimately insane cannibals. Each time he comes out on top, fighting tooth and nail to survive.

Weaknesses: Minho has also shown the ability to be selfish and cowardly as seen in his abandonment of Thomas and Alby in the Maze, but once he was appointed as the official leader of the Gladers, he took responsibility and tried to make choices that would benefit the majority rather than himself. His stubbornness is both a strength and a weakness, and in some cases it would have gotten it killed if not for the quick-thinking of his friends. Though he's selected to be the leader, he needs his friends to keep him calm and make him think things through for the good of the group. At times he seems to forget that not everyone is on the same level of physical ability as he is.

There's also the fact that he had his memories wiped and was put in a box for two years without any connection to the outside world, leaving him an incomplete picture of the world. He knows words but not how he learned them and understands concepts he's never seen. He knows that a family is usually made up of parents and children, but the only family he's ever known are the other boys from the Glade. This is fine in his own world, but when thrown into a different reality it makes it hard for him to deal with all of the newness doesn't feel as new as it should be.

Network Sample: TDM thread

Prose Sample: Minho didn’t know whether to laugh or scream. He was, once again, trapped somewhere against his will, a new maze to map and escape. On one hand, it was a fresh and exciting challenge; he would be lying if he said he didn’t like the thrill of danger lurking around every corner, that it was pretty much the reason for his existence. A smaller part of him was tired of always being on edge as he had been since they'd left the relative safety of the Glade. There he’d had friends and familiarity, at least after they had established order, and safe nights when he could relax and recharge for the next morning. After they'd figured out how the Maze worked and what they needed to do to survive, the mundane march of the days had felt more dangerous to his sanity than anything else.

Now, he was the Greenie again. It reminded him of when he'd first arrived in the Glade and it had felt like he'd gone to hell. He didn't know why he had a concept of hell, didn't understand where most of his memories had come from. At least here, now, he was allowed to keep the few years of his life that he did remember from before. But there were no rules here, no comforting walls or dangers that at least ran like clockwork. As he felt panic start to seep into his bones, he fought it back with determination. Maybe he didn't know why he was here or what he had to do, but he had priorities.

First, he needed to find a good place to hunker down. Second, he needed to find his friends. Third, he needed to find out if there was anyone already here, people running the Trials before them that might be able to help them the way they'd always had to help the Newbies. This list gave him strength and a purpose and, most importantly, a goal to keep him focused. Because if there was one thing about Minho, it was that he'd complete a mission even if it killed him.
